Pedigree of Safeen

Safeenīs sire IBN SAFINAZ was one of the most successful Straight Egyptian stallions in performance as well as in halter classes in the U.S.. He was named U.S. Top Ten Stallion in halter and was a numerous Get of Sire winner besides many Championships in halter and performance. We tried to use him by transported semen when he was already 25 years old, but did not succeed in a pregnancy. In Safeen we now own a first class son of Ibn Safinaz, who has proven to breed on the incomparable character and rideability of his sire line.
Ibn Safinaz died on September 3rd 2008 at the age of 27. His last caretaker, Anne-Louise Toner, gives us an idea of his uniqueness:
"...Regarding Saff, well, he is the sweetest, most darling horse on the planet, and whenever I am taking him anywhere rests his muzzle on my right hand, just breathing on my fingers and gently rubbing his lips on them while we walk. His latest trick is to take a big mouthful of water as I come into his stall and wait until I am not paying attention to let the whole lot dribble either down my front or over my shoulder. I have told him that I am onto him and try to watch him like a hawk, but he is a patient horse and will hold that water for fifteen to twenty minutes until I am distracted (and the water is all warm and slimey) before nailing me. He is my darling, darling friend and I love him to pieces."
SEEF was a handsome sire at the EAO in Egypt with a good racing record. His father was MASHOUR by SHAHLOUL and his mother Elwya by Sid Abouhom out of Zareefa, the latter the dam of El Sareei and Madkour by Morafic, the sire of Messoud and grandsire of Imperial Madheen (paternal grandsire of Safeen).
Mashour 1941 (Shahloul X Bint Rustem)
Shahloul 1931 and his grandgrandson Ibn Safinaz 1981, both in old age, note the similarity in type and appearance!
Shahloul (Ibn Rabdan X Bint Radia)
Hamdan 1936, full brother to Shahloul
Safeen as well as Ibn Safinaz are inbred to the two brothers and Saklawi stallions Shahloul and Hamdan.
The Saklawi influence not only comes through the direct sire line, but through some of the most important daughters of Shahloul:
Kateefa (dam of Alaa El Din)
Moniet El Nefous (via the highly inbred sires Moniet El Nafis and Ansata Shah Zaman and also Madkour Or. Ar.)
Maisa (dam of Madkour Or.Ar.)
and the direct daughter of Hamdan, Shahbaa, an Inshass mare of the rare Kuhailan Krush strain.
Shahbaa 1951 (Hamdan X Shahd)
Three additional lines to Shahloul in Safeens pedigree come through the important El Sareei, a full brother to Maisa.
Three sires in a row from the prestigeous Imperial Egyptian Stud in Maryland make up most of Safeenīs pedigree. All of them have been very important sires that show the breeding philosopy of Imperial: type, correctness, good size and athletic ability . In 1985 as a veterinary student I stayed at Imperial for several weeks and had the opportunity to get to know their superb breeding stock.
Moniet El Nafis, inbred to Moniet El Nefous, was a tall and nearly perfect horse, himself a very good riding horse and a sire of successful racing horses. He is the last of three Imperial stallions in a row in Safeenīs pedigree.
Moniet El Nafis 1976 (Ibn Moniet El Nefous X Hoyeda)
But Safeen can offer also a very rare damline: the Saklawi mare Bint Serra, imported to the U.S. by Henry Babson.
Bint Serra 1923 (Sotamm X Serra)
Serra < Jemla (Jamila) < Ghazala El Beida < Bint Helwa < Horra < Ghazieh < Ghazala < Saklawia Jedrania of the Rualla beduins ca. 1840
Abitibi Madeenah 1987 (by Imperial Madheen), dam of Safeen. and her sire Imperial Madheen 1984 in old age. Abitibi Madeena was bought by Eileen Verdieck of Imperial and sold in foal to Ibn Safinaz to Mr. Hamilton Schmidt. Safeen is her only offspring.
