The strain of Saqlawi Jedran Part Three

Ghazieh El Zarka c.1850 through Bint Yamamah c.1894

Some of the most famous Arabian horses exported from Egypt to Europe and America during the 1920s and 1930s had been associated with the strain of Koheilan Jellabi, all of them bred by Prince Mohammed Ali and descendant of his mare Bint Yamama c.1895, bred by Khedive Abbas II. This had to be corrected because of different reasons.

Nasr 1918 (Rabdan El Azrak X Bint Yamamah), a classic Saqlawi stallion

The first references of Bint Yamamah by The Blunts show her as daughter of Yemameh c.1872, bred by Ali Pasha Sherif, the dam of Mesaoud. Kafifan 1916 (Mabrouk Manial X Negma) was sold to Poland as a Saqlawi. Only with Jasir, a full brother to Kafifan, the Jellabi strain was mentioned the first time in the pedigrees. Also the Babson and Brown imports to America were given as Jellabies. In 2000 a genetic investigation was done by Dr. Anne Bowling using mDNA markers that showed clearly that Bint Yamamah matches Bint Helwa, descending to Ghazieh c.1850 of Abbas Pasha. No match was found to Makbula, a mare coming from Bint Jellabiet Feysul in tail female line. Thus, as so often, Lady Bluntīs information turned out to be the most reliable.

Mahroussa c.1921 (Mabrouk Manial X Negma), full sister to Kafifan and Jasir, mother of Fadl, Maaroufa, Zarife, Hamida

Maaroufa 1931 (Ibn Rabdan X Mahroussa),  as yearling and  adult mare, an exceptional broodmare
